In 1989, the Danish paper BT wrote an article about a young upcoming singer, model Stina, and how superstar George Michael wrote a song in her album.
Below is the translation of the article:
Odense: 19 years old and on the way to stardom. All because she sat in a bathroom in France, singing Danish folk songs.
This is the amazing story about Stina Marslund from Funen.
She probably on the verge of her major breakthrough in France. It was no less than the mega idol George Michael, that has written a song for her.“ Beasoin D’amour” is the title of the single and video being released on September 1st.
“Yeah, I have to pinch myself sometimes. It all happened very, very fast”, says the blonde from Funen to B.T.
And it all started in a restroom.
Stina explains:
“I was on my way to a video shoot. I worked as a model at that time and was cast to play some bimbo in a music video. During a break on the shoot, I went to the restroom. I was sitting there, singing a favorite folk song “A sweet and lovely summertime.” When I came out there was a man waiting for me. Charles Dupont.”
“I didn’t understand anything you sang, but your voice is beautiful”, he said and promised to get me a record deal.
French men are pretty smooth and flirty, so I didn’t read that much into it. But, bingo, a few days later the phone rang, and Dupont asked me to come over for lunch. One of his friends had written a song for me. I was more than overwhelmed when I realized that friend was no less than George Michael.”
“George Michael was very nice but seemed kind of surprised that I was smitten with him or tried to flirt with him. Popstarish”, the happy Dane says with a sigh – unimpressed with all the hoopla.
George Michael also helped produce the single. Stina Marslund has a contract for yet another single and an album.
So, then you will probably become a millionaire?
“No, hardly. I doubt it.”, Stina laughs.
“But that’s fine. I get by. That’s all I need. It’s enough to be an average 19-year-old girl from a small island like Funen to get a chance like this”, says Stina, that just 6 months earlier packed her two suitcases, and bought a one-way ticket to Paris.
With no other skills than her enthusiasm and her voice.
And that seemed to be enough.
