Short piece on Wham!’s Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael on the sports that they like and how they keep fit from No. 1 magazine published on September 3, 1989.
Notice two bad boys on bikes around town?
It’s probably just George and Andrew, weaving in and out of traffic and flexing a few muscles.
After all, if you will make your videos on a Spanish beach wearing just your swimming cossie, you have to make sure you’re not just flexing flab.
The young guns have been threatening to get fighting fit for their first nationwide tour, due to start in just a few weeks time.
But it isn’t easy when you can’t stand most sports.
“I hate running. I hate jogging. I hate squash,” says Andrew.
“There’s so few sports that I actually enjoy.
“I like swimming, but if we do go to a public bath we just get hassled.
“We spent a day in a dance centre choreographing the ‘Bad Boys’ routine. Next day I ached so much I couldn’t believe it.
“When we did Top of the Pops I was in pain!”
Sounds like Andrew needs to all the leg work he can get.
But all that fancy foot work on the dance floor of his favourite Club Tropicana does mean he plays a nifty game of footer.
“I enjoy football. At school I used to play it and that used to keep me relatively fit.
“But I was never that fit.”
As for Dee and Shirley, they’re not saying what they do to keep in shape. But then they don’t look as if they need to really.
