The excitement for the movie ‘Last Christmas” has been building up among George Michael fans. Not only is the movie based on Wham!’s song “Last Christmas,” it is supposed to showcase several George Michael songs – PLUS – an unreleased song.
In celebration of George Michael’s birthday, the statement released by his family touched on the movie:
The 2nd (-and only other officially sanctioned by us this year) Event, will be the ‘Last Christmas’ Movie, out in November, a project Yog was involved with in its’ initial stages, along with the super talented team of Emma Thompson and Greg Wise
The director Paul Fieg, in an interview with Collider.com, revealed some pretty fascinating information about George Michael’s music used in the movie, in particular:
- They have the rights to most of George Michael’s music catalog
- The unreleased song was recorded right before he passed
- George was putting an album together so there are several more and “they’re all great”
Are you all curious yet as to this unreleased song?
Listen to Paul Feig’s interview (around the 2 minute mark) and read the pertinent part of the transcript below:
Q: No one watching this will have seen the movie or knows much about it so talk a little bit as to what the film is about and talk about the movie, title, who’s in it, and everything
PAUL FIEG: Yea, it’s called ‘Last Christmas’ and it’s actually Emma Thompson co-wrote it and it is based “very loosely” on the Wham!’s song ‘Last Christmas.’ And we actually have the rights to most of George Michael’s music catalog, so the movie features a ton of songs from George.
We’d like to call it a dramatic romantic comedy because it’s about Emilia Clarke, who’s the star, Harry Goulding is the other star, the leading man. She’s a woman whose life is kinda a disaster in London and she’s just screwing everything up and she meets Henry who is this kinda of an oddball guy who comes out in the left field and they just developed a strange relationship where they kinda start helping each other out.
It’s just a very sweet, funny movie. But it’s unexpected because there’s a whole layer.. two layers to it beyond the romantic comedy. It’s quite emotional. It’s a full experience. I am just so proud of it.
Q: I saw the footage here, and I believe you have a George Michael song that has never been released.
PAUL FIEG: Yeah, we’re gonna have one that we have full rights to do, that he recorded right before he passed, very sadly. He was putting an album together and it’s an amazing song, so we have that and hopefully, we can get another one too because there’s a few that exist and they’re all great.
I always like George Michael but the appreciation I have for him now knowing his entire body of work, knowing more of his process because Emma is like … Emma Thompson knew him; she’d been developing the script for almost seven years and he knew about it back then. And she talked to him about it. They discussed it a lot.
It’s a real love letter to London. We shot all in Central London in locations where most people don’t really shoot at like Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus, the Strand, the embankment, the Covent Garden we got to take over. I love London. My mom’s side of the family is British and I am really excited to get to show off the London that I love.
