Below is part of the article “£12.5m… George reveals the real cost of his big mistake: I’ll fight him for every penny says star facing officer’s double lawsuit” published by The Express and written by Neil Michael on September 18, 1999
Michael admitted that although he felt his arrest and final confirmation of his homosexuality had trivialised his sex life, coming out had helped his music career. “The good side is that unwittingly this whole situation has created more exposure for my music,” he said. “On the bad side, the reasons I didn’t come out years ago have been completely confirmed, which is that my life has become trivialised and I am now gay star George Michael as opposed to pop singer George Michael. Ultimately, it’s not a huge price to pay and my life has definitely improved in some ways. “I feel people are aware that I am proud of who I am. I knew that people suffered under the illusion that I wasn’t, so that makes life a little richer.” One thing he was not too keen to talk about in the interview was his charity work.
At Thursday’s press conference for NetAid’s Wembley concert on October 9, at which he will be performing, he was asked if it was true he had donated £500,000 to help Kosovar refugees.
Reluctantly he admitted that he had. Yesterday he showed the same reluctance to comment on estimates that he has given £20million away to charity during his career. He said: “To be honest with you, I really don’t like to talk about the amount I’ve given to charity over the years, I know it’s very substantial. I don’t exactly know what it is and I don’t really like to linger on it.”
