Short interview by Peter Martin published in the September 1986 issue of No. 1 Magazine.
Why did you decide to split when you did?
It’s simple. We achieved what we wanted to achieve and got the opportunity of finishing it off better than most people in the same situation. We’re both very glad to end it now, not because we’re both pissed off as hell, but because we’ve been able to gracefully say ‘enough is enough.’ We’ve had a good time and we should stop while it’s valid.
And how did you choose this exact time?
We made the ultimate pop record in “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” and as you go on, your aims change. We wanted to be the ultimate pinup band, and we attained that goal. After ‘Freedom’ I decided that was no longer what I wanted. I know I could’ve continued with Wham! though. I know I’m that good an actor. But then again, why bother — we wanted to come out with dignity, and I think we did.
How will you cope with not having Andrew around?
Well, obviously it’s not going to damage my musical output.
Don’t you think you should be a little more … delicate?
Andrew’s always been far more honest about that side of things. He’s always felt perfectly confidence that he had a right to be in Wham! anyway. If I hadn’t wanted to be in a group with him, I could’ve stopped years ago, so why, so why should he feel the need to protect his interest by lying?
And what’s next for George Michael?
I know everyone expects me to become a cross between Barry Manilow and James Last (Britain’s answer to Liberace — Muzak Ed.) but I’m not! I’m going to play with my success. I know I have two different audiences that are both prepared to accept me,. There definitely will be some of what people expect. ‘cos that’s what I’m best at.
