George Michael will remain immortal through his music. In fact, he’s already reaching a different audience – the heavy metal fans.
The American heavy metal band Eagles of Death Metal has included a cover version of George Michael’s song “Careless Whisper” in their album “The Best Songs We Never Wrote.” In this video interview of EODM’s front man Boots Electric (Jesse Everett Hughes), he explained his absolute love of the song “Careless Whisper” calling George Michael as “one of my biggest heroes.”
Transcript of the interview:
Careless Whisper is a track selection that is probably the one that would seem the most out of left field but it’s one of my favorite songs.
It summed up every guilt sensation I ever had in a relationship so perfectly that it is truly in my opinion a song that has that transcendent reality of being like on the level of a poet laureate. It’s a true demonstration of artistic mastery in my opinion.
I selected that song because I warm up to that song backstage. I have an experience at a European festival about, I don’t know, about seven years ago and on the bill at this festival were some of the top names in the band — you know, Corey Taylor was there; Howard from Killswitch Engage; Rise Against — I mean there were so many heavy bands. And I had that song blasting in my dressing room.

As I started doing my warmup, one by one — in the most adorably meek and “I hate to bother you” kind of way — the heaviest, toughest metal rock performers of our time would come in singing with abandon, with wild abandon and with a carelessness that is on the level of mystical whimsy singing at the top of our lungs Careless Whisper. Everyone had this look on their face of supreme joy of, “Finally I can have an out of closet experience with my friend Boots Electric and we’re gonna sing a whisper carelessly”, you know.
It just goes to show again music that’s good it’s transcendent and if you interpret it with respect and honesty you cannot screw it up. A good song is a good song and Careless Whisper is one of the toughest most punk rock songs I have ever heard in my life and George Michael is one of my biggest heroes.”
